Azam Khan Walks Free After 23 Months in Sitapur Jail

Azam Khan, senior Samajwadi Party leader, walked out of Sitapur jail two days ago after spending nearly 23 months behind bars. On Thursday, he strongly reiterated his allegiance to the party and its chief, Akhilesh Yadav, saying, “Akhilesh is to me what Mulayam ji was.” Back at his Rampur residence, Khan declared, “I have a character, and I have shown that it is not for sale.”

Azam Khan Rejects BSP Switch Rumors

He dismissed rumors about joining the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), stating, “I may be a fool, but not that dumb. There is no doubt, I’ll remain with the party.” Speculation about a possible switch to BSP grew after reports claimed his wife, former MP Tazeen Fatima, met BSP chief Mayawati in Delhi and suggested Khan might attend the party’s mega rally in Lucknow on October 9.

BSP and Political Experts React

The BSP has not confirmed these reports. Its only MLA, Uma Shankar Singh, said he was unaware of any such meeting but admitted that Khan’s entry would strengthen the party. Political experts believe Khan joining BSP could help the party regain influence among Muslim voters in Western Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, Aazad Samaj Party chief Chandrashekar Azad announced plans to meet Khan soon, according to the Times of India.

Azam Khan’s Legal Battles and Convictions

Khan’s legal troubles began in February 2020 when he, his wife, and son surrendered in a forged birth certificate case. Over the years, he faced multiple charges, including forgery, land grabbing, and theft. In October 2022, a court convicted him of hate speech and sentenced him to three years in prison, leading to his disqualification from the UP Assembly. He secured interim bail from the Supreme Court in May 2022.

Multiple Sentences and Recent Bail

His second jail term started in October 2023 after a Rampur court sentenced him, his wife, and son to seven years in the forged certificate case. While his family secured release in 2025, Khan remained in jail due to fresh convictions. These included a 10-year sentence in a 2016 house eviction case, bail in theft-related charges, and an acquittal in a 2008 protest case. After receiving bail in all six convictions, Khan now faces several pending trials.
